The M-56 was adopted by the country of Yugoslavia in 1956. It was designed and built by the Zastava Arms company. Yugoslavia has now been broken up and has reverted to the original six countries that once formed it. These were Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia.

This gun was largly copied from the German MP-40 of WWII and some of the parts will interchange. It is well made and was in service for quite a long time. It is in 7.62X25 caliber, as were many other Communist Block firearms of this period.

The heart of this project is the Yugoslav M-56 sub-machine gun parts kit. The core of it is the Prexis/Sten 80% receiver and complete, US made, bolt and the Clark Universal Striker system. With these parts and a reasonable amount of time and skill, you can make this historic firearm speak again!

This CD based book covers my building of the Yugoslav M-56 sub-maching gun from a demilled parts kit through a functioning, legal semi-automatic 9mm pistol or carbine. I chose to build a pistol as this is the easiest and preserves the original appearance of the gun.
